Jane Austen's Remarkable Aunt, Philadelphia Hancock: 'A Girl of Genius and Feeling'

JASA is delighted to invite members and their guests to our 2024 Christmas Luncheon. Once again we will meet at the usual York Street, Sydney location.

Date
Saturday 14 December 2024

Time
11.30am for 12.00pm start

Location
Club York, 95-99 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000

A Passage to India

Our annual lunch, which also celebrates Jane Austen’s birthday, will feature the launch of member Jan Merriman’s new book Jane Austen’s Remarkable Aunt, Philadelphia Hancock: ‘A Girl of Genius and Feeling‘.

Sydney members may recall that Jan spoke to us at a meeting in October 2021 about her research for her book (you can read Jan’s paper in the December 2021 issue of Sensibilities).

Philadelphia Hancock was Jane Austen’s father’s older sister who was orphaned, sent to live with relatives, served as a millinery apprentice in London, and then packed off to India to marry. She gave birth to her daughter Eliza, later Eliza de Feuillide who subsequently married Jane’s brother Henry.

We’ll also have a talk by Adrian Dickens from Circa AD Jewels on Jewels of the Raj. Adrian has been a regular at JASA Christmas lunches since he spoke to a Sydney meeting in February 2022 on Jewels of the Regency. Expect to see lots of luscious photos!

Bookings are taken in order of receipt and will close once we reach capacity. A waiting list will be held on a first come first served basis.

Raffle tickets will be for sale at the event (cash only), as well as Regency Fair (cash or card purchases).
