The 2015 annual Jane Austen birthday celebration and Christmas lunch was held on 12 December this year. Over 180 guests enjoyed the celebration of our favourite author’s birthday over a delicious lunch and wonderful hospitality in the central location of 99 York Street, Sydney.
This year’s special speaker, Richard Foss entertained and enlightened guests on the beverages of the Regency period. The world portrayed in Jane Austen’s books is one of elaborate banquets and sumptuous parties, but she provides few details on just what was consumed at those events, and some items mentioned are unfamiliar to modern readers. Richard, dressed in fabulous Regency attire, supplied some of the details Ms. Austen left out – what refreshments both alcoholic and non-intoxicating were enjoyed in England of 1800, and how Ms. Austen indicated the character of her characters from the things they chose to drink or serve.
At the conclusion of the talk guests were treated to a glass of authentic Glasgow Punch from a recipe dating to 1770.
A thoroughly enjoyable lunch was had and another year of Jane Austen study and enjoyment was brought to a close in magnificent style.
